Tanning is associated with optimal vitamin D status (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration) and higher bone mineral density

Tidsskrift: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

(Am J Clin Nutr 2004;80:1645–9)

December 2004

Uddrag af tidsskriftets resumé: “Vitamin D is made in the skin on exposure to solar radiation, and it is necessary to optimal skeletal health. Subjects who use a tanning bed that emits ultravioletBradiation (290–315 nm) are likely to have higher 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations than do subjects who do not regularly use a tanning bed. […] Conclusion: The regular use of a tanning bed that emits vitamin D–producing ultraviolet radiation is associated with higher 25(OH)D concentrations and thus may have a benefit for the skeleton.”

Sun beds and cod liver oil as vitamin D sources

Tidsskrift: Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology

(J Photochem Photobiol B. 2008 May 29;91(2-3):125-31)

Maj 2008

Uddrag af tidsskriftets resumé: “The objective of this study was to (1) to determine the contribution of moderate sun bed exposure to serum 25(OH)D3 [D-vitamin, red.] levels; (2) to estimate the decay time of a high 25(OH)D3 level obtained by sun bed exposure; and (3) to evaluate if the recommended ingestion of vitamin D is sufficient to maintain the 25(OH)D3 concentration obtained by sun bed exposure. […] Serum level of 25(OH)D3 increased by about 40% on the average.”

Solar Radiation, Vitamin D and Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Norway

Tidsskrift: Anticancer research

(Anticancer Res 2009;29:3501-3509)

September 2009

Uddrag af tidsskriftets resumé: “Solar radiation is of fundamental importance for human development and health: On the one hand, too much of it can lead to skin ageing and skin cancer, whilst on the other, too little of it can result in vitamin D deficiency, and, thereby lead to high incidence and poor prognosis of internal cancer as well as a number of other diseases.”

Sunlight, vitamin D and the prevention of cancer: a systematic review of epidemiological studies

Tidsskrift: European Journal of Cancer Prevention

(Eur J Cancer Prev. 2009 Aug 26)

26. august 2009

Uddrag af tidsskriftets resumé: “The number of studies reporting beneficial effects of sunlight and vitamin D on several types of cancer with a high mortality rate is growing rapidly. Present health recommendations on sun exposure are mainly based on the increased risks for skin cancer. We reviewed all published studies concerning cancer and sun exposure and vitamin D, respectively, excluding those about skin cancer. […]We, therefore, conclude that there is accumulating evidence for sunlight as a protective factor for several types of cancer.”

On the epidemiology of influenza

Tidsskrift: Virology Journal

(Virol J. 2008 Feb 25;5:29)

25. februar 2008

Forfatter: John J. Cannell, Michael Zasloff, Cedric F. Garland, Robert Scragg og and Edward Giovannucci

Uddrag af tidsskriftets resumé: “The epidemiology of influenza swarms with incongruities, incongruities exhaustively detailed by the late British epidemiologist, Edgar Hope-Simpson. He was the first to propose a parsimonious theory explaining why influenza is, as Gregg said, “seemingly unmindful of traditional infectious disease behavioral patterns.” Recent discoveries indicate vitamin D upregulates the endogenous antibiotics of innate immunity and suggest that the incongruities explored by Hope-Simpson may be secondary to the epidemiology of vitamin D deficiency. ”

Does an active sun exposure habit lower the risk of venous thrombotic events? A D-lightful hypothesis

Tidsskrift: Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis

(J Thromb Haemost. 2009 Apr;7(4):605-10)

April 2009

Uddrag af tidsskriftets resumé: “Venous and arterial thrombotic complications [blodpropper, red.] exhibit a seasonal variation, with risk peaking in winter and dropping to a nadir in summer. We sought a possible correlation between sun exposure habits and venous thromboembolism (VTE) events. […] Women with more active sun exposure habits were at a significantly lower risk of VTE.”

Sun and sun beds: inducers of vitamin D and skin cancer

Tidsskrift: Anticancer research

(Anticancer Res. 2009 Sep;29(9):3495-500)

September 2009

Forfattere: Emanuela Cicarma, Alina Carmen Porojnicu,  Zoya Lagunova, Arne Dahlback,  Asta Juzeniene og Johan Moan

Norsk forskning argumenterer for, at befolkninger i nordlige lande kan få en positiv effekt ud af at øge deres eksponering for UVB for at forbedre deres D-vitamin-niveau.

Uddrag af tidsskriftets resumé: “Solar radiation is both the main cause of all types of skin cancer, including cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), and the main source of vitamin D accompanied by its beneficial effects. The dilemma lies in that increased sun exposure could lead to an increase in skin cancers and yet is necessary for the better prognosis of internal cancers. […] Sun and sun beds act similarly: one quantum of radiation at a given wavelength has the same biological effect, irrespective of the source from which it comes. The winter levels of vitamin D are 10 to 100% lower than the summer levels in most populations, but can be brought up to summer levels by moderate sun bed exposure. Populations living at high latitudes would probably benefit from moderately increasing their exposure to UVB to provide a good vitamin D status.”
